Patterns in the 10 times table

  • Last digits. Every answer ends in 0.
  • Even answers. 10 is even, so every product in its table is even.
  • Digit sums. Reduce each answer to a single digit (10 × 1 to 10 × 9 give 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) and all nine values appear before repeating.
  • Built from a smaller table. 10 = 2 × 5, so every answer is double the matching answer in the 5 times table: 10 × 7 = 2 × 35 = 70.

A shortcut for multiplying by 10

Shift every digit one place to the left by writing a zero on the end: 10 × 23 = 230.

Worked example: 10 × 14

Split 14 into 10 + 4: 10 × 10 = 100 and 10 × 4 = 40, so 10 × 14 = 140.
