The 5 times table from 1 to 20

5 × 1 through 5 × 9 belong to the core facts — every product of two one-digit numbers — that US standards expect students to know from memory by the end of third grade. Each row also gives the matching division fact.

Patterns in the 5 times table

  • Last digits. The ones digits repeat every 2 steps: 5, 0, then 5, 0 again and so on. Only 2 different endings ever appear.
  • Odd and even. 5 is odd, so the answers alternate odd, even, odd, even — odd times odd is odd, odd times even is even.
  • Digit sums. Reduce each answer to a single digit (5 × 1 to 5 × 9 give 5, 1, 6, 2, 7, 3, 8, 4, 9) and all nine values appear before repeating.
  • A prime table. 5 is prime, so its table cannot be built by chaining smaller tables — learn it directly or split 5 into 3 + 2: 5 × 6 = 18 + 12 = 30.

A shortcut for multiplying by 5

Take ten times the number and halve it: 5 × 14 = 140 ÷ 2 = 70. Every answer ends in 5 or 0.

Worked example: 5 × 14

Split 14 into 10 + 4: 5 × 10 = 50 and 5 × 4 = 20, so 5 × 14 = 70.
