The 4 times table from 1 to 20

4 × 1 through 4 × 9 belong to the core facts — every product of two one-digit numbers — that US standards expect students to know from memory by the end of third grade. Each row also gives the matching division fact.

Patterns in the 4 times table

  • Last digits. The ones digits repeat every 5 steps: 4, 8, 2, 6, 0, then 4, 8, 2, 6, 0 again. Only 5 different endings ever appear.
  • Even answers. 4 is even, so every product in its table is even.
  • Digit sums. Reduce each answer to a single digit (4 × 1 to 4 × 9 give 4, 8, 3, 7, 2, 6, 1, 5, 9) and all nine values appear before repeating.
  • Built from a smaller table. 4 = 2 × 2, so every answer is double the matching answer in the 2 times table: 4 × 7 = 2 × 14 = 28.

A shortcut for multiplying by 4

Double, then double again: 4 × 13 → 26 → 52.

Worked example: 4 × 14

Split 14 into 10 + 4: 4 × 10 = 40 and 4 × 4 = 16, so 4 × 14 = 56.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 4 times table up to 12?

4 × 1 = 4, 4 × 2 = 8, 4 × 3 = 12, 4 × 4 = 16, 4 × 5 = 20, 4 × 6 = 24, 4 × 7 = 28, 4 × 8 = 32, 4 × 9 = 36, 4 × 10 = 40, 4 × 11 = 44, 4 × 12 = 48.

What is the easiest way to learn the 4 times table?

Double, then double again: 4 × 13 → 26 → 52.

What is 4 times 20?

4 × 20 = 80. Multiply 4 by 2 to get 8, then write a zero on the end.

Where is the 4 times table used in real life?

Any time you count equal groups of 4: a car has 4 wheels, so the wheels in several cars come straight from the 4 times table.
