Patterns in the 11 times table
- Last digits. The ones digits of 11 × 1 to 11 × 10 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0 — all ten digits appear once before the pattern repeats, because 11 shares no factor with 10.
- Odd and even. 11 is odd, so the answers alternate odd, even, odd, even — odd times odd is odd, odd times even is even.
- Digit sums. Reduce each answer to a single digit (11 × 1 to 11 × 9 give 2, 4, 6, 8, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9) and all nine values appear before repeating.
- A prime table. 11 is prime, so its table cannot be built by chaining smaller tables — split it instead: 11 × k = 10 × k + 1 × k.
A shortcut for multiplying by 11
For 1 to 9, repeat the digit (11 × 6 = 66). For a two-digit number, add its digits and put the sum in the middle: 11 × 18 → 1 | 9 | 8 = 198 (carry when the sum is 10 or more).
Worked example: 11 × 14
Split 14 into 10 + 4: 11 × 10 = 110 and 11 × 4 = 44, so 11 × 14 = 154.
