Patterns in the 12 times table
- Last digits. The ones digits repeat every 5 steps: 2, 4, 6, 8, 0, then 2, 4, 6, 8, 0 again. Only 5 different endings ever appear.
- Even answers. 12 is even, so every product in its table is even.
- Digit sums. Reduce each answer to a single digit by adding its digits and you get 3, 6, 9, repeating — a sign that every answer is a multiple of 3.
- Built from a smaller table. 12 = 2 × 6, so every answer is double the matching answer in the 6 times table: 12 × 7 = 2 × 42 = 84.
- Split by place value. 12 × k = 10 × k + 2 × k, so 12 × 13 = 130 + 26 = 156.
A shortcut for multiplying by 12
Ten times plus twice: 12 × 7 = 70 + 14 = 84. Twelve twelves, 144, is a gross.
Worked example: 12 × 14
Split 14 into 10 + 4: 12 × 10 = 120 and 12 × 4 = 48, so 12 × 14 = 168.
