Food packages, newborn weights and parcel scales are often marked in ounces when you want pounds — or the reverse. Because a pound is 16 ounces rather than 10, dividing in your head is awkward, and the remainder is easy to misread: 40 oz is 2.5 lb, but it is 2 lb 8 oz, not 2 lb 5 oz. This converter shows both forms.
How to use the ounces to pounds converter
- Enter the weight in Ounces (oz).
- Read the result in decimal pounds.
- The pounds and ounces row splits it the way a scale or birth certificate would. Grams and kilograms are listed too.
- The package table converts common net weights printed on food labels.
Ounces to pounds formula
For pounds and ounces, use whole-number division:
The relationship is exact: one avoirdupois ounce is defined as 1/16 of the international pound (0.45359237 kg), or 28.349523125 grams.
Worked example
A bag of rice is labeled 40 oz.
Decimal pounds: 40 ÷ 16 = 2.5 lb.
Pounds and ounces: 16 × 2 = 32, and 40 − 32 = 8, so 2 lb 8 oz.
Metric: 40 × 28.3495 = 1,134 g, about 1.13 kg.
A second case, a newborn: a nurse’s scale reads 121 oz. 121 ÷ 16 = 7.5625 lb; 16 × 7 = 112, leaving 9 oz, so the baby weighs 7 lb 9 oz (3.43 kg).
Package sizes in pounds
| Net weight | Pounds | lb & oz | Grams |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 oz | 0.5 | 8 oz | 227 |
| 12 oz | 0.75 | 12 oz | 340 |
| 14.5 oz | 0.906 | 14.5 oz | 411 |
| 16 oz | 1 | 1 lb | 454 |
| 24 oz | 1.5 | 1 lb 8 oz | 680 |
| 28 oz | 1.75 | 1 lb 12 oz | 794 |
| 32 oz | 2 | 2 lb | 907 |
| 48 oz | 3 | 3 lb | 1,361 |
| 64 oz | 4 | 4 lb | 1,814 |
US labeling rules under the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act require the net weight in both customary and metric units, and packages weighing at least 1 lb but under 4 lb state it both in ounces and in pounds and ounces — “NET WT 28 OZ (1 LB 12 OZ) 794 g” is the format you will see on a large can.
Why a pound has 16 ounces
The avoirdupois system comes from medieval English trade in bulk goods, where a pound that could be halved four times (8, 4, 2, 1 ounces) suited balance scales and a merchant’s set of weights. That same convenience is why fractions like 1/4 lb and 1/2 lb come out to whole ounces. The older troy system, still used for precious metals, splits its pound into only 12 ounces.
Common mistakes
- Reading the remainder as a decimal. 2.5 lb is 2 lb 8 oz, not 2 lb 5 oz.
- Mixing weight and volume. A 16 fl oz bottle of olive oil holds 16 fluid ounces of volume but its contents weigh only about 15.2 oz, because oil is lighter than water.
- Dividing by 12. Twelve is the inches-per-foot and troy-ounces-per-troy-pound figure; avoirdupois needs 16.
To go the other way, use pounds to ounces. For metric recipes, convert with ounces to grams, and for larger body or luggage weights, lbs to kg.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert ounces to pounds?
Divide by 16. For example, 40 oz ÷ 16 = 2.5 lb. To express it as pounds and ounces, take the whole pounds (2) and the remainder in ounces (40 − 32 = 8), giving 2 lb 8 oz.
How many pounds is 32 ounces?
Exactly 2 pounds, since 32 ÷ 16 = 2. A 32 oz package is a 2 lb package.
How many pounds and ounces is 100 ounces?
6 lb 4 oz. Sixteen goes into 100 six times (96 oz) with 4 ounces left over. As a decimal, 100 ÷ 16 = 6.25 lb.
Does this work for fluid ounces?
No. Fluid ounces measure volume, so a 12 fl oz can of soda does not weigh 0.75 lb in general. For water, one US fluid ounce weighs about 1.04 ounces, so 12 fl oz of water weighs roughly 0.78 lb.
