Recipes from Europe and most of the world list ingredients in grams, while American kitchens, butchers and bathroom scales think in pounds. This converter turns grams into decimal pounds and into pounds and ounces, so a 500 g pack of mince or a 2,500 g bag of flour translates directly into the units on your scale or shopping list.
How to use the grams to pounds converter
- Enter the weight in Grams (g).
- Read the result in pounds, to five decimal places.
- Below it you get the same weight in pounds and ounces, in ounces alone and in kilograms.
- The chart lists common package sizes, and the second table converts pound amounts back to grams for shopping.
Grams to pounds formula
The divisor is exact by definition: the international pound is 0.45359237 kg. For pounds and ounces, take the whole pounds and multiply the decimal part by 16, since an ounce is 1/16 of a pound (28.3495 g).
Worked example
A recipe calls for 500 g of pasta.
Pounds: 500 ÷ 453.59237 = 1.1023 lb.
Pounds and ounces: 0.1023 × 16 = 1.64 oz, so 1 lb 1.64 oz.
Ounces only: 500 ÷ 28.3495 = 17.64 oz.
So a standard 1 lb (454 g) box is about 46 g short; you would need a little from a second box.
A larger case: a 2,500 g bag of bread flour is 2,500 ÷ 453.59237 = 5.51 lb, or 5 lb 8.2 oz.
Metric package sizes in pounds
| Grams | Pounds | lb & oz |
|---|---|---|
| 100 g | 0.22 | 3.5 oz |
| 125 g | 0.276 | 4.4 oz |
| 200 g | 0.441 | 7.1 oz |
| 250 g | 0.551 | 8.8 oz |
| 400 g | 0.882 | 14.1 oz |
| 500 g | 1.102 | 1 lb 1.6 oz |
| 750 g | 1.653 | 1 lb 10.5 oz |
| 1,000 g | 2.205 | 2 lb 3.3 oz |
| 2,000 g | 4.409 | 4 lb 6.5 oz |
Notice that US products often come in metric amounts that are really round customary sizes: 227 g is half a pound, 340 g is 12 oz and 454 g is 1 lb.
Converting recipes
When a baking recipe is written in grams, converting each ingredient to pounds is rarely the best approach — the numbers get awkward (0.276 lb of butter). Better options:
- Weigh in grams. Most digital kitchen scales switch units with one button, and grams are more precise for flour and sugar.
- Use ounces for small amounts. 125 g of butter is 4.4 oz, easier to read than 0.276 lb.
- Convert to volume only when you must. Grams of flour to cups depends on the ingredient’s density; the cooking converter handles ingredient-specific conversions.
Accuracy
Because the pound is defined exactly in grams, the only rounding is in the display. Five decimal places of a pound are about 5 milligrams — finer than any kitchen or postal scale. For body weight and larger amounts, kg to lbs is quicker; for small weights where ounces are the natural unit, use grams to ounces.
Frequently asked questions
How many grams are in a pound?
Exactly 453.59237 grams. That figure is the legal definition of the international avoirdupois pound, adopted by the US, UK and other countries in 1959.
How many pounds is 500 grams?
