Kitchen scales, nutrition labels and most of the world’s packaging use grams; American recipes, postal rates and deli counters use ounces. This converter turns any number of grams into ounces using the legal definition of the ounce, and adds pounds and ounces once the total passes a pound so large amounts still make sense at a glance.

How to use the grams to ounces converter

  1. Type the mass in Grams (g).
  2. The answer appears in ounces. Below it you’ll see kilograms, troy ounces for metals and — for 454 g and up — pounds and ounces.
  3. The table covers 1 g to 1 kg, including the package sizes you see most often on shelves.

The grams to ounces formula

The avoirdupois ounce is defined as 1/16 of a pound, and the pound as exactly 453.59237 g. That makes the ounce exactly 28.349523125 g:

ounces = grams ÷ 28.349523125  ≈  grams × 0.035274

Worked example: a 250 g block of butter

European butter is often sold in 250 g blocks.

Step 1. 250 ÷ 28.349523125 = 8.8185 oz.

Step 2. A US stick of butter is 4 oz, so the block equals about 2.2 sticks, or just over a cup.

Doubling the amount: 500 g is 17.637 oz. Since 16 oz make a pound, that is 1 lb 1.64 oz — a handy fact when a recipe asks for “a pound of pasta” and the box says 500 g.

Common package sizes in ounces

Package Grams Ounces
Chocolate bar 100 3.53
Snack bag 200 7.05
Butter block 250 8.82
Coffee bag 340 11.99
“One pound” pack 454 16.01
Pasta box 500 17.64
Flour or sugar bag 1,000 35.27

Labels that list both units round them separately, which is why a 340 g bag of coffee is marked “12 oz” even though it is a hair under.

Ounces for postage

Postal rates in the US are tiered by the ounce. A Letter-size sheet of ordinary 20 lb (75 g/m²) copy paper weighs about 4.5 g, so five sheets plus a typical business envelope come to roughly 27–28 g — just under the 28.35 g that makes one ounce. A sixth sheet, or a heavier envelope, tips it over, so weigh anything close to the line.

Troy ounces for precious metals

Gold, silver, platinum and palladium are quoted in troy ounces, an older system that survives in bullion markets. One troy ounce is 31.1034768 g. Because it is larger than the food ounce, the same number of grams gives fewer troy ounces:

Grams Avoirdupois oz Troy oz
1 0.0353 0.0322
10 0.3527 0.3215
31.1035 1.0971 1
100 3.5274 3.2151

When valuing jewelry or coins, always use the troy figure; the troy weight converter adds pennyweights and grains.

Dry ounces vs fluid ounces

An ounce on a scale is a mass; a fluid ounce on a measuring cup is a volume. They line up only for water and similar liquids. If a recipe gives liquids in fluid ounces, convert with milliliters to fluid ounces instead. To turn ounces back into grams, use the ounces to grams converter.

Frequently asked questions

How many ounces are in 100 grams?

100 g is 3.5274 oz. Food labels often round this to 3.5 oz.

What is the formula for grams to ounces?

Divide the grams by 28.349523125, the exact number of grams in an avoirdupois ounce. Multiplying by 0.035274 gives the same result to four decimal places.

Are gold ounces the same as regular ounces?

No. Gold, silver and platinum are priced in troy ounces of 31.1034768 g, about 9.7% heavier than the 28.3495 g ounce used for food. A 10 g gold bar is 0.3215 troy oz but 0.3527 ordinary ounces.

Can I use this for fluid ounces?

Only for water-like liquids, and only approximately. Fluid ounces measure volume, not mass. A US fluid ounce of water weighs about 29.5 g, but oil, honey or flour differ widely. For volumes, use the milliliters to fluid ounces converter.
