Kilograms are the world’s standard for body weight, food packaging, gym equipment and shipping; pounds remain the everyday unit in the United States. This converter gives you pounds to four decimals and, because a long decimal is hard to picture, also breaks the answer into pounds and ounces and into stone and pounds for UK readers.
How to use the kg to lbs converter
- Enter a mass in Kilograms (kg).
- Read the result in pounds, then the pounds-and-ounces and stone-and-pounds rows.
- The chart below the steps covers 0.5 kg to 200 kg, including the range of adult body weights, with a pounds-and-ounces column.
Kilograms to pounds formula
The avoirdupois pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kg, so the exact conversion is a division:
To split off ounces, multiply the decimal part of the pounds by 16. For stone, divide total pounds by 14.
Worked example: a body weight of 70 kg
Step 1. 70 ÷ 0.45359237 = 154.3236 lb.
Step 2. Ounces: 0.3236 × 16 = 5.18, so 154 lb 5.2 oz.
Step 3. Stone: 154.3236 ÷ 14 = 11.02 st, which is 11 st 0.3 lb.
The mental shortcut gives 70 × 2 = 140, plus 10% = 154 lb — close enough to know which side of a weight class you are on.
Gym plates and bars
Competition plates and bars in weightlifting and powerlifting are made in kilograms, and many gyms outside the US use them exclusively. Here is what they weigh in pounds:
| Equipment | Kilograms | Pounds |
|---|---|---|
| Change plate | 1.25 | 2.76 |
| Small plate | 2.5 | 5.51 |
| Plate | 5 | 11.02 |
| Plate | 10 | 22.05 |
| Plate / women’s bar | 15 | 33.07 |
| Plate / men’s bar | 20 | 44.09 |
| Plate | 25 | 55.12 |
A 20 kg bar with two 20 kg plates on each side (100 kg in total) weighs 220.46 lb — about 4.5 lb lighter than the “225” (a 45 lb bar plus two 45 lb plates a side) that many US lifters use as a benchmark.
Luggage and shipping
Airline baggage limits are usually set in kilograms on international routes. The most common checked-bag limit of 23 kg is 50.71 lb, and the 32 kg heavy-bag limit is 70.55 lb. Couriers bill by the kilogram or half-kilogram, so converting a package weighed at home in pounds is easier from the other direction — see pounds to kilograms.
Mass, weight and scales
Strictly, kilograms and pounds both measure mass, while weight is the force gravity exerts on that mass. Everyday scales are calibrated to show mass, so a 70 kg person reads 154.3 lb anywhere on Earth. For BMI and other health formulas that expect metric inputs, keep the original kilograms rather than converting back and forth; the BMI calculator accepts either system. For UK-style body weight, the stone to kilograms converter works the other way round.
Frequently asked questions
How many pounds are in a kilogram?
One kilogram is 2.20462 pounds (2.2046226218 to ten decimal places). It is the reciprocal of 0.45359237, the exact number of kilograms in one pound.
How do I convert kg to pounds and ounces?
Multiply by 2.20462 to get pounds, keep the whole number, and multiply the decimal part by 16 for ounces. For 70 kg: 154.3236 lb, and 0.3236 × 16 = 5.2 oz, so 154 lb 5.2 oz.
What is a quick way to convert kg to lbs in my head?
Double the kilograms, then add 10% of that result. For 70 kg: 140 + 14 = 154 lb. The trick runs about 0.2% low, which is within the accuracy of most bathroom scales.
How many pounds is a 20 kg barbell?
44.09 lb. A standard men's Olympic bar is 20 kg and a women's bar is 15 kg (33.07 lb), so they are close to, but not the same as, the 45 lb bars common in US gyms.
Is the kilogram still defined by a metal cylinder?
No. Since May 20, 2019, the kilogram has been defined by fixing the value of the Planck constant. The platinum-iridium prototype kept near Paris is now a historical artifact, but the pound is still defined as exactly 0.45359237 kg.
