Show the work

  1. Rewrite as an improper fraction: 1 34 = 1 × 4 + 34 = 74
  2. Divide to get a decimal: 7 ÷ 4 = 1.75
  3. Multiply by 100 to convert to a percent (move the decimal point two places right): 1.75 × 100 = 175%
  4. Shortcut: 74 × 100% = 7004% = 175%

Percent means “per hundred,” so converting a mixed number to a percent is a matter of asking how many hundredths it contains. Because a mixed number is at least one whole, its percent is usually 100% or more: 1 3/4 is 175%. This calculator shows the conversion both through the decimal and directly from the fraction, and handles repeating results.

How to use the converter

  1. Enter the whole number and the fraction part. Use a minus sign on the whole number for negative values.
  2. Choose how many decimal places to round the percent to.
  3. The tape shows the exact percent (repeating digits marked with a bar), the rounded percent, the decimal and the improper fraction.

Two ways to convert

Through the decimal

percent = (w + n ÷ d) × 100

Divide the fraction part, add the whole number, then move the decimal point two places to the right.

Straight from the fraction

percent = (w·d + n) × 100 ÷ d

Write the improper fraction, multiply its numerator by 100 and divide by the denominator. This avoids rounding until the very end.

Worked example: 1 3/4

  1. Improper fraction: 1 × 4 + 3 = 7, so 1 3/4 = 7/4.
  2. Decimal: 7 ÷ 4 = 1.75.
  3. Percent: 1.75 × 100 = 175%.

Fraction route: 7/4 × 100 = 700/4 = 175. Same answer.

A repeating example: 2 1/3

2 1/3 = 7/3 = 2.333…, so the percent is 233.333…%, written 233.3̅%. Rounded to two decimal places it is 233.33%. The fraction route shows why it repeats: 700 ÷ 3 = 233 with a remainder of 1, and dividing that remainder by 3 gives 0.333… forever.

Mixed number Decimal Percent
1 1/4 1.25 125%
1 1/2 1.5 150%
1 3/4 1.75 175%
2 1/3 2.333… 233.33%
2 1/2 2.5 250%
3 1/8 3.125 312.5%

Reading percents over 100%

A percent above 100 compares something to a smaller base. “Sales were 1 1/2 times last year’s” is the same as “sales were 150% of last year’s,” which is an increase of 50%. Be careful not to mix these up: 150% of a number is 1.5 times it, while 150% more than a number is 2.5 times it. The percentage calculator works out increases and decreases from either form.

For proper fractions (less than 1), the fraction to percent calculator is a closer fit; to go the other way, use percent to fraction.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert a mixed number to a percent?

Convert it to a decimal, then multiply by 100. For 1 3/4: 1 3/4 = 1.75, and 1.75 × 100 = 175%. You can also multiply the improper fraction by 100: 7/4 × 100 = 175.

Can a percent be more than 100?

Yes. 100% is one whole, so any mixed number with a whole part of 1 or more is at least 100%. 2 1/2 is 250%, meaning two and a half times the original amount.

How is a repeating percent written?

The repeating digits continue after the decimal point of the percent. 2/3 = 66.666…%, written 66.6̅% or 66.(6)%, and usually rounded to 66.67%.

What does 1 3/4 as a percent mean in practice?

It means 175 for every 100. If a plant grew to 1 3/4 times its starting height, its new height is 175% of the original — an increase of 75%.
