An improper fraction has a numerator greater than or equal to its denominator, like 47/6. Converting it to a mixed number — 7 5/6 — makes the size easy to picture: a little less than 8. The conversion is one division with a remainder, and this calculator shows it as a long-division layout as well as in words.
How to use the converter
- Enter the numerator on top and the denominator below. Put a minus sign on the numerator for a negative fraction.
- The tape shows the mixed number, its whole part and remainder, the simplified fraction and the decimal.
- The layout under the steps shows the long division of the numerator by the denominator, with the remainder written after R.
The method
- Divide the numerator by the denominator.
- The whole-number quotient becomes the whole part.
- The remainder becomes the numerator of the fraction part.
- Keep the denominator. Simplify the fraction part if possible.
Worked example: 47/6
- 6 goes into 47 seven times: 7 × 6 = 42.
- 47 − 42 = 5 is the remainder.
- Write the mixed number: 7 5/6 (≈ 7.8333).
Check by going back: 7 × 6 + 5 = 47, so 7 5/6 = 47/6. ✓
When the fraction part simplifies
For 50/12: 12 goes into 50 four times (48), leaving 2, so 50/12 = 4 2/12. The fraction 2/12 reduces to 1/6, giving 4 1/6. Simplifying 50/12 to 25/6 first gives the same result: 25 ÷ 6 = 4 R 1.
Quick reference
| Improper fraction | Division | Mixed number |
|---|---|---|
| 7/2 | 7 ÷ 2 = 3 R 1 | 3 1/2 |
| 11/4 | 11 ÷ 4 = 2 R 3 | 2 3/4 |
| 17/5 | 17 ÷ 5 = 3 R 2 | 3 2/5 |
| 22/7 | 22 ÷ 7 = 3 R 1 | 3 1/7 |
| 35/8 | 35 ÷ 8 = 4 R 3 | 4 3/8 |
| 100/16 | 100 ÷ 16 = 6 R 4 | 6 1/4 |
Negative improper fractions
Convert the positive fraction and put the minus sign in front of the whole mixed number: −47/6 = −7 5/6. That means −(7 + 5/6), about −7.83. It does not mean −7 + 5/6, which would be about −6.17.
Where this is used
Answers to fraction arithmetic often come out improper, and measurements read more naturally as mixed numbers — “3 1/2 cups” rather than “7/2 cups.” The same quotient-and-remainder idea is the heart of long division: a remainder of 5 when dividing by 6 is the 5/6 in the mixed number. To convert back, use the mixed number to improper fraction calculator; for the decimal form, see fraction to decimal.
Frequently asked questions
How do you convert an improper fraction to a mixed number?
Divide the numerator by the denominator. The quotient is the whole number, the remainder is the new numerator, and the denominator stays the same. For 47/6: 47 ÷ 6 = 7 remainder 5, so 47/6 = 7 5/6.
What if the remainder is zero?
Then the fraction equals a whole number. 24/6 = 4 exactly, because 6 goes into 24 four times with nothing left over.
Should I simplify before or after converting?
Either works. 50/12 can become 4 2/12 and then 4 1/6, or you can simplify first to 25/6 and get 4 1/6 directly. The calculator reduces the fraction part at the end.
What happens with a proper fraction like 3/4?
A proper fraction is already less than 1, so its whole-number part is 0 and there is nothing to convert. It stays 3/4.
