Long division is the written method for dividing one number by another when the answer is too big to know by heart. It breaks the problem into a short cycle — divide, multiply, subtract, bring down — repeated once for each digit of the dividend. This calculator gives the quotient and remainder, draws the complete layout the way it is written in US classrooms, and explains every pass through the cycle.
How to use the long division calculator
- Enter the dividend, the number being divided. Whole numbers up to 30 digits are supported, and commas are ignored.
- Enter the divisor, the number you divide by (1 or more).
- The tape shows the quotient and remainder, the answer as a mixed number and as a decimal.
- The layout shows the divisor outside the division bracket, the quotient on top, and each subtraction underneath. Blue digits mark the digit brought down at each step.
The four steps
- Divide: how many times does the divisor fit into the current number? Write that digit above the last digit you used.
- Multiply: multiply that digit by the divisor and write the product underneath.
- Subtract: the difference must be smaller than the divisor; if not, the quotient digit was too small.
- Bring down: append the next digit of the dividend to the difference and start again.
When no digits are left to bring down, the final difference is the remainder.
Worked example: 7,852 ÷ 6
- 6 goes into 7 once. 1 × 6 = 6, and 7 − 6 = 1. Bring down 8 → 18.
- 6 goes into 18 three times. 3 × 6 = 18, and 18 − 18 = 0. Bring down 5 → 5.
- 6 goes into 5 zero times — write 0 in the quotient. 5 − 0 = 5. Bring down 2 → 52.
- 6 goes into 52 eight times. 8 × 6 = 48, and 52 − 48 = 4. No digits remain.
The answer is 1,308 R 4. Check: 1,308 × 6 + 4 = 7,848 + 4 = 7,852 ✓
Division vocabulary
| Term | Meaning | In 7,852 ÷ 6 |
|---|---|---|
| Dividend | The number being divided | 7,852 |
| Divisor | The number you divide by | 6 |
| Quotient | How many whole times the divisor fits | 1,308 |
| Remainder | What is left over (always less than the divisor) | 4 |
These four numbers are always linked by the division equation:
Tips for dividing by larger numbers
- Estimate each quotient digit by rounding the divisor. To divide by 47, think “about 50”: 50 goes into 230 about 4 times, then check 4 × 47 = 188.
- If the subtraction leaves a number bigger than the divisor, the quotient digit is too small; increase it by 1.
- If the product is bigger than the number above it, the digit is too big; decrease it by 1.
- Never skip a zero in the quotient. Every brought-down digit produces exactly one quotient digit.
The remainder is also what the modulo calculator returns, and turning a remainder into a fraction is the same move used to convert an improper fraction to a mixed number. To continue past the decimal point instead of stopping at a remainder, use long division with decimals.
Frequently asked questions
What are the steps of long division?
Repeat four steps: divide the current number by the divisor, multiply the quotient digit by the divisor, subtract that product, and bring down the next digit of the dividend. When no digits are left, whatever is left over is the remainder.
What is the remainder in long division?
It is the amount left over after the divisor has gone into the dividend as many whole times as possible. It is always smaller than the divisor. For 7,852 ÷ 6 the remainder is 4, because 6 × 1,308 = 7,848 and 7,852 − 7,848 = 4.
How do I write a remainder as a fraction or decimal?
Put the remainder over the divisor: 1,308 R 4 becomes 1,308 4/6, which simplifies to 1,308 2/3. To get a decimal instead, keep dividing past the ones place by adding zeros — the long division with decimals calculator does exactly that.
Why is there a 0 in the middle of the quotient?
When the divisor does not go into the current number at all, the quotient digit for that place is 0, and you must write it to hold the place. In 7,852 ÷ 6, after bringing down the 5 you have 5, and 6 goes into 5 zero times, so the quotient is 1,308, not 138.
How do I check a long division answer?
Multiply the quotient by the divisor and add the remainder. The result should equal the dividend: 1,308 × 6 + 4 = 7,852.
