Show the work

  1. Divide the numerator by the denominator: 7 ÷ 12 = 0.583
  2. Multiply by 100 to get a percent: 58.3%
  3. The decimal repeats, so round it: 58.33% (to 2 decimal places)

A fraction compares a part to a whole using any denominator; a percent makes the same comparison using a denominator of 100. Converting from one to the other lets you compare results that started with different denominators — 17 out of 20 on one quiz and 21 out of 24 on another — on a single scale. This calculator gives the exact percent, including repeating decimals marked with a bar, a rounded version for reporting, and the percent as a mixed number such as 58⅓%.

How to use the fraction to percent calculator

  1. Enter the numerator and denominator. For a mixed number, put the whole part in the left box.
  2. Choose how many decimal places you want in the rounded answer.
  3. The tape shows the exact percent and the rounded value. When the denominator divides evenly into 100, the steps use the scaling shortcut; otherwise they divide.

Two ways to convert

Method 1: make the denominator 100

If the denominator is a factor of 100 — 2, 4, 5, 10, 20, 25 or 50 — scale it up:

a/b = (a × k)/(b × k) where b × k = 100, so the percent is a × k

For example, 3/25 = 12/100 = 12%.

Method 2: divide, then multiply by 100

This always works:

percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100

Worked example: 7/12

Can 12 scale to 100? No — 100 ÷ 12 isn't a whole number, so divide.

Divide: 7 ÷ 12 = 0.58333… (the 3 repeats)

Multiply by 100: 58.333…% = 58.3̅%

Rounded to two places: 58.33%

As a mixed percent: 700/12 = 175/3 = 58⅓%

When the answer repeats

A fraction in lowest terms gives a terminating decimal only when its denominator has no prime factors other than 2 and 5. Denominators like 3, 6, 7, 9, 11 and 12 produce repeating decimals, so their percents repeat too:

Fraction Exact percent Rounded
1/3 33.3̅% = 33⅓% 33.33%
1/6 16.6̅% = 16⅔% 16.67%
1/7 14.285714…% 14.29%
5/9 55.5̅% = 55 5/9% 55.56%
1/11 9.0̅9̅% 9.09%
7/12 58.3̅% = 58⅓% 58.33%

Round only at the end. If you round 1/7 to 14% and then use it to split $7,000, you’ll get $980 — $20 short of the correct $1,000 share.

Grades and scores

Teachers and students use this conversion constantly. A quiz score of 17/20 is 85%; a test score of 21/24 is 87.5%. When several assignments have different point totals, convert each fraction to a percent before comparing them — or better, use the grade calculator, which weights each category for you.

Some schools round grades to the nearest whole percent and others truncate; 89.5% may become a 90 or stay an 89 depending on policy. Choose “Whole percent” to see the conventional rounding.

Fractions greater than one

A fraction bigger than 1 converts to more than 100%. Production that hits 9/8 of its target is at 112.5%. For mixed numbers, the mixed number to percent calculator offers the same conversion with a focus on the whole-number part.

To convert the other way, use the percent to fraction calculator. If you only need the decimal, the fraction to decimal calculator shows the long division.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert a fraction to a percent?

Divide the numerator by the denominator and multiply by 100. For 7/12, 7 ÷ 12 = 0.58333…, and × 100 gives 58.333…%, which rounds to 58.33%.

Is there a shortcut when the denominator is 4, 5, 20 or 25?

Yes. If the denominator divides evenly into 100, scale the fraction so the denominator becomes 100. For 3/20, multiply top and bottom by 5 to get 15/100, which is 15%.

What is 1/3 as a percent?

1 ÷ 3 × 100 = 33.333…%, a repeating decimal. It is often written as 33⅓% or rounded to 33.33%.

How do I turn a test score like 21 out of 24 into a percent?

Treat it as the fraction 21/24 and convert: 21 ÷ 24 = 0.875, so the score is 87.5%.

Can a fraction be more than 100%?

Yes, any fraction greater than 1 is more than 100%. 5/4 is 125% and the mixed number 2 1/2 is 250%.
