Your sun sign is simply where the Sun stood along the zodiac when you were born. Most horoscope columns use a fixed table of dates, which works for nearly everyone — except people born within a day of a sign change. This calculator does it the astronomical way: it computes the Sun’s apparent ecliptic longitude for your birth moment and reads the sign from it, then adds the element, modality, ruling planet, decan and the sidereal (Vedic) sign.
How to use the zodiac sign calculator
- Enter your birth date.
- If you know it, add your birth time. It only changes the answer on a cusp day; leave it blank and the calculator uses noon.
- Choose the time zone that applied where you were born, including daylight saving time in summer.
- Read your sign on the tape. If the Sun changed signs on your birth date, a cusp row tells you the exact local time it happened.
The first table lists the conventional date ranges for all twelve signs. The second shows when the Sun actually entered each sign in your birth year, in the time zone you chose.
How the sign is calculated
The zodiac is the Sun’s yearly path against the sky (the ecliptic), divided into twelve equal 30° signs. The tropical zodiac used in Western astrology places 0° Aries at the March equinox, so:
Here λ is the Sun’s apparent ecliptic longitude. The calculator computes it from a truncated VSOP87 planetary theory with corrections for nutation and aberration (the method in Jean Meeus’s Astronomical Algorithms). That reproduces published equinox and solstice times to about a minute.
The remainder inside the sign gives the decan: 0°–10° is the first, 10°–20° the second and 20°–30° the third.
Worked example
Born June 14, 1996, at noon, US Eastern Standard Time (UTC−5).
The Sun's longitude at that moment was 83.897°. Dividing by 30 gives 2.797, so two full signs (Aries and Taurus) have passed and the Sun is in the third sign, Gemini, at 23°54′. That is the third decan.
With the Lahiri ayanamsa of 23.80° for 1996, the sidereal longitude is 60.10°, which is still Gemini.
Why cusp dates move
A calendar year is 365 or 366 days, but the Sun takes about 365.2422 days to come back to the equinox. The sign change therefore happens about six hours later each year, then jumps back after a leap day. Time zones shift it again. In 2027, for example, the Sun’s ingress times in Universal Time are:
| Sign | Sun enters (UTC, 2027) | Conventional first day |
|---|---|---|
| Aquarius | Jan 20, 07:30 | Jan 20 |
| Pisces | Feb 18, 21:33 | Feb 19 |
| Aries | Mar 20, 20:25 | Mar 21 |
| Gemini | May 21, 06:18 | May 21 |
| Leo | Jul 23, 01:05 | Jul 23 |
| Scorpio | Oct 23, 15:33 | Oct 23 |
| Capricorn | Dec 22, 02:42 | Dec 22 |
So someone born after 9:33 p.m. on February 18, 2027, in London is a Pisces even though most tables still say Aquarius, and a baby born in New York after 9:05 p.m. EDT on July 22, 2027, is a Leo rather than a Cancer.
Elements and modalities
Each sign pairs one of four elements with one of three modalities, and no two signs share the same pair:
| Element | Cardinal | Fixed | Mutable |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire | Aries | Leo | Sagittarius |
| Earth | Capricorn | Taurus | Virgo |
| Air | Libra | Aquarius | Gemini |
| Water | Cancer | Scorpio | Pisces |
Cardinal signs begin each season, fixed signs sit in the middle and mutable signs close it.
Tropical, sidereal and the stars
Because Earth’s axis wobbles over about 25,800 years, the March equinox creeps backward through the constellations by roughly one degree every 72 years. Western astrology keeps its signs tied to the equinox; Vedic astrology subtracts an offset called the ayanamsa to stay aligned with the stars. The Lahiri value is about 24.2° in 2026, which is why your sidereal sign is often the one before your tropical sign.
For the year-animal system used in East Asia, try the Chinese zodiac calculator. To see what the sky looked like on your birthday, the moon phase calculator shows the Moon’s phase for any date, and the birthday calculator finds the day of the week you were born.
Frequently asked questions
What is my zodiac sign if I was born on a cusp?
Nobody is truly half one sign and half another: at any moment the Sun is in exactly one 30° segment of the zodiac. The date of the change moves by about a day from year to year, so enter your birth time and time zone and the calculator compares the Sun's position at that moment with the sign boundary.
Why do different websites list slightly different zodiac dates?
The Sun reaches each sign boundary at a specific instant, and that instant drifts by up to a day between years because the calendar year is not exactly 365 days. Published tables round this to fixed dates, and the date also depends on your time zone.
What is the difference between tropical and sidereal signs?
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which starts Aries at the March equinox. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars; because the equinox slowly drifts against the stars, the two now differ by about 24°, which usually moves a sidereal sign back by one.
Is the Sun really in the constellation of my sign?
Usually not. Signs are equal 30° slices measured from the equinox, while constellations are star patterns of unequal size. Precession has shifted them apart by most of a sign since the system was set up about two thousand years ago.
Is astrology scientific?
No. Controlled studies have not found that sun signs predict personality or events. This calculator reports astronomical positions accurately; how you use the traditional meanings is up to you.
