Numbers written in words appear on checks, in legal documents, in word problems and in early-grade homework that asks students to move between word form, standard form and expanded form. Turning “forty-two thousand six hundred five and three tenths” into 42,605.3 — or the reverse — is mostly about reading one period at a time and remembering which places are empty. This converter handles both directions, decimals included, and explains how each group of words became digits.
How to use the converter
- Choose Words → number or Number → words.
- For words, type the number as you would say it:
three million two hundred, nineteen hundred eighty-four,twelve point zero five, seven and three hundredths, negative forty. Hyphens are optional, and “a hundred” or “a thousand” work too. - For numbers, type digits with or without commas.
- The tape shows the result, plus the expanded form, scientific notation and, for dollar amounts, the check-writing style.
Reading word form, period by period
Large numbers are spoken in periods of three digits — ones, thousands, millions, billions — each named once:
| Words | Periods | Standard form |
|---|---|---|
| three million two hundred | 3 | 000 | 200 | 3,000,200 |
| forty-two thousand six hundred five | 42 | 605 | 42,605 |
| one billion seven | 1 | 000 | 000 | 007 | 1,000,000,007 |
| nineteen hundred eighty-four | 1 | 984 | 1,984 |
Within a period, the words are always some combination of hundreds, tens and ones. Any period that is never mentioned is written as 000 — the most common source of mistakes.
Worked example
Convert “forty-two thousand six hundred five and three tenths.”
"forty-two thousand" → the thousands period is 42 → 42,000
"six hundred five" → the ones period is 605 (no tens, so a 0 holds the tens place)
"and three tenths" → "and" marks the decimal point; three tenths = 0.3
Standard form: 42,605.3
Decimals in words
There are two common ways to say decimals:
- Place-value reading (used in US classrooms and on checks): read the decimal digits as a number and name the last place. 0.25 is “twenty-five hundredths”; 3.007 is “three and seven thousandths”.
- Digit-by-digit reading (common in science and everyday speech): “three point zero zero seven”.
The converter understands both and writes the place-value form, listing the “point” reading as well. Place names after the decimal point are tenths, hundredths, thousandths, ten-thousandths, hundred-thousandths and millionths; the place value calculator shows them on a chart.
Large number names (US short scale)
| Name | Digits | Power of ten |
|---|---|---|
| thousand | 1,000 | 10³ |
| million | 1,000,000 | 10⁶ |
| billion | 1,000,000,000 | 10⁹ |
| trillion | 1 followed by 12 zeros | 10¹² |
| quadrillion | 1 followed by 15 zeros | 10¹⁵ |
| quintillion | 1 followed by 18 zeros | 10¹⁸ |
The US uses the “short scale,” where each new name is 1,000 times the last. Some languages use a long scale in which a billion means a million millions (10¹²), so translated documents occasionally mix them up.
Writing checks
Banks expect the amount in words to match the figures, and when they disagree the words generally take precedence. Write dollars in words and cents as a fraction over 100 — “Two hundred fifteen and 40/100” for $215.40 — and draw a line through the remaining space. The checkbook calculator helps keep the register balanced afterward.
To see the same number written as a sum of place values, use the expanded form calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert word form to standard form?
Read the words one period at a time — billions, millions, thousands, then the rest — and write each period as a three-digit group, using zeros for missing places. "Three million two hundred" becomes 3 | 000 | 200, or 3,000,200.
How do you write 3,000,200 in words?
Three million two hundred. The thousands period is all zeros, so it is skipped entirely when the number is read aloud.
How are decimals written in words?
Read the whole number, say "and" for the decimal point, then read the decimal digits as a whole number followed by the name of the last place. 42,605.3 is "forty-two thousand six hundred five and three tenths". Casually, people also say "point three".
Should I use "and" in whole numbers?
In US school math, no — "and" is reserved for the decimal point, so 205 is "two hundred five". British English commonly says "two hundred and five". This calculator accepts both but writes the US form.
How do I write a dollar amount on a check?
Write the dollars in words and the cents as a fraction of 100: $1,250.75 is "One thousand two hundred fifty and 75/100" dollars. The calculator shows this check-writing style for amounts with two or fewer decimal places.
