Ten minutes here and there feels like nothing, but daily habits compound the same way money does. This calculator converts the minutes a habit takes each day into hours per week, per year and over the rest of your life — in full 24-hour days, in waking days and in 40-hour work weeks. Add a cut-back target to see how much time you would get back, and an hourly value to put a price on it.
How to use the time wasted calculator
- Optionally name the habit — scrolling, commuting, TV, gaming, meetings.
- Enter the minutes per day and the days per week you do it.
- Enter your age and the age to count until. U.S. life expectancy at birth is a little under 80, so 80 is a reasonable default.
- Optionally enter a cut-back target in minutes per day and the value of an hour of your time.
- Read the lifetime total on the tape and the table of totals over different periods.
Formulas
52.18 is the average number of weeks in a year (365.25 ÷ 7).
Worked example
You spend 45 minutes a day scrolling social media, every day, and you are 30.
- Per week: 45 × 7 = 315 minutes = 5.25 hours
- Per year: 5.25 × 52.18 = 273.9 hours, or about 11.4 full days — almost 7 work weeks
- Until age 80: 273.9 × 50 = 13,697 hours, which is 571 full days (about 1.6 years) or 856 waking days (about 2.3 years awake)
Cutting back to 15 minutes a day frees 30 minutes daily: 182.6 hours a year, or about 9,131 hours by age 80 — 571 waking days.
How common habits add up
| Daily time | Per year | Over 10 years | Over 40 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 minutes | 61 h | 609 h | 2,435 h |
| 30 minutes | 183 h | 1,826 h | 7,305 h |
| 1 hour | 365 h | 3,653 h | 14,610 h |
| 2 hours | 731 h | 7,305 h | 29,220 h |
| 3 hours | 1,096 h | 10,958 h | 43,830 h |
For scale: a full-time job is about 2,080 hours a year, and a bachelor’s degree is roughly 1,800 to 2,000 hours of class time plus study. Two hours a day of anything is a third of a full-time job.
Making the numbers useful
Choose the right comparison
Hours are abstract. Work weeks, waking days and money are easier to feel. If an hour of your time is worth $25, a 45-minute daily habit represents about $6,850 of time a year.
Count the commute
A 30-minute commute each way, five days a week, is 5 hours a week — about 261 hours a year, or six and a half 40-hour work weeks spent in transit.
Not all time is wasted
The same math measures time you want more of: reading, exercise, practice. Twenty minutes a day of practice is about 122 hours a year, a meaningful amount of deliberate learning.
Track before you estimate
Phone screen-time reports and calendar data are usually higher than people guess. Use a week of real numbers for the minutes-per-day field.

Frequently asked questions
How much is 1 hour a day over a year?
One hour a day for 365.25 days is 365.25 hours, which equals about 15.2 full 24-hour days or about 22.8 waking days of 16 hours. That is roughly 9 work weeks of 40 hours.
How much time do I spend on my phone over a lifetime?
Multiply your daily minutes by 7, by 52.18 weeks and by the years ahead, then divide by 60. At 45 minutes a day from age 30 to 80, that is about 13,700 hours — 571 full days, or about 2.3 years of waking life.
What are waking days?
A waking day assumes about 16 hours awake and 8 asleep. Measuring in waking days shows how much of your conscious time a habit takes, which is more meaningful than 24-hour days.
Does the calculator count leap years?
Yes, approximately. It uses 365.25 days per year (52.18 weeks), which averages in leap years, so long-range totals are slightly more accurate than using 52 weeks.
