A full-time work year is 2,080 hours by convention: 40 hours a week × 52 weeks. That is the number payroll departments use to convert salaries to hourly rates. The calendar does not divide evenly into weeks, though: 2026 has 261 weekdays, or 2,088 hours, and after the 11 federal holidays, 250 working days, or 2,000 hours. Subtract two weeks of vacation and you are at 1,920 hours actually worked. Which number is “right” depends on what you are calculating.
The key figures for 2026
| Measure | Days | Hours (8-hour days) |
|---|---|---|
| Standard payroll year (52 × 40) | 260 | 2,080 |
| Weekdays in 2026 | 261 | 2,088 |
| Weekdays minus 11 federal holidays | 250 | 2,000 |
| Minus 10 days of vacation | 240 | 1,920 |
| Minus 10 days of vacation and 5 sick days | 235 | 1,880 |
The working days calculator counts weekdays and holidays for any year or date range.
Why 2,080 is a convention, not a count
A 365-day year is 52 weeks and 1 day; a leap year is 52 weeks and 2 days. Depending on which weekday those extra days land on, a year has 260, 261 or 262 weekdays:
| Year | Weekdays | Weekday hours | Federal holidays observed in the year | Workdays after holidays |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 262 | 2,096 | 11 | 251 |
| 2025 | 261 | 2,088 | 11 | 250 |
| 2026 | 261 | 2,088 | 11 | 250 |
| 2027 | 261 | 2,088 | 12 | 249 |
| 2028 | 260 | 2,080 | 10 | 250 |
2027 has 12 observed federal holidays because New Year’s Day 2028 falls on a Saturday and is observed on Friday, December 31, 2027; 2028 therefore has only 10. Over a long period the average is about 2,087 hours a year, which is why the federal government uses 2,087 as the divisor to compute hourly rates for General Schedule employees.
Work hours by month in 2026
| Month | Weekdays | Weekday hours | Federal holidays | Hours after holidays |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 22 | 176 | 2 | 160 |
| February | 20 | 160 | 1 | 152 |
| March | 22 | 176 | 0 | 176 |
| April | 22 | 176 | 0 | 176 |
| May | 21 | 168 | 1 | 160 |
| June | 22 | 176 | 1 | 168 |
| July | 23 | 184 | 1 | 176 |
| August | 21 | 168 | 0 | 168 |
| September | 22 | 176 | 1 | 168 |
| October | 22 | 176 | 1 | 168 |
| November | 21 | 168 | 2 | 152 |
| December | 23 | 184 | 1 | 176 |
| Total | 261 | 2,088 | 11 | 2,000 |
July’s holiday is Independence Day, observed on Friday, July 3, because July 4, 2026 falls on a Saturday. The average month has 2,080 ÷ 12 = 173.33 hours, the figure many employers use for monthly salaries; actual months swing between 152 and 176 hours once holidays are removed.
Which number should you use?
Converting salary to hourly pay
Use 2,080. Salaried employees are paid the same annual amount regardless of how many weekdays fall in the year, and paid holidays and vacation are part of that salary. $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 an hour. The salary to hourly calculator and the guide on how to convert salary to hourly cover the details.
Budgeting hourly wages
Use the weekday count for that year if hourly employees are paid for every weekday, including paid holidays: 2,088 hours in 2026. At $25 an hour, that is $52,200 rather than the $52,000 the 2,080 estimate gives. Employers paying biweekly also see some years with 27 paydays instead of 26 when the extra weekday lines up, which matters for budgeting salaried payroll too.
Productivity, staffing and billable hours
Use hours actually available: weekdays minus holidays, vacation, sick time and training. A full-time employee with 11 holidays, 15 vacation days and 5 sick days works about (261 − 11 − 15 − 5) × 8 = 1,840 hours in 2026. Freelancers and consultants should go further and estimate billable hours after administrative time; 1,000 to 1,500 billable hours a year is a realistic range for many solo professionals.
PTO accrual rates
Most policies divide annual PTO by 2,080 to get a per-hour accrual rate, regardless of the calendar. See how to calculate PTO accrual.
Work hours in perspective
A 365-day year has 8,760 hours (8,784 in a leap year). A 2,080-hour work year is about 24% of all the hours in the year, or roughly 36% of waking hours if you sleep 8 hours a night. Counting a 30-minute commute each way adds another 250 hours or so over 250 workdays, which is worth remembering when you compare a higher-paying job with a longer commute against a closer one.
The 53-payday problem
Because a year is 52 weeks plus one or two days, one or two weekdays occur 53 times. In 2026, January 1 is a Thursday, so there are 53 Thursdays and 52 of every other weekday. An employer that pays weekly on Thursdays will run 53 payrolls in 2026. Biweekly payrolls hit 27 paydays roughly once every 11 years.
This affects salaried employees most. If a $60,000 salary is paid as $60,000 ÷ 52 = $1,153.85 a week, a 53-payday year pays $61,153.85. Some employers accept the extra cost; others divide by 53 that year, which lowers each paycheck slightly. Hourly employees are unaffected, since they are paid for hours worked. If you budget on a per-paycheck basis, check how many paydays your year actually has.
Other schedules
| Weekly schedule | Standard annual hours (× 52) |
|---|---|
| 40 hours | 2,080 |
| 37.5 hours | 1,950 |
| 35 hours | 1,820 |
| 32 hours (four 8-hour days) | 1,664 |
| 30 hours | 1,560 |
| 20 hours | 1,040 |
Under the Affordable Care Act, 30 hours a week (or 130 hours a month) is the threshold for full-time status for employer health coverage rules, a different definition from the 40-hour overtime threshold in the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Counting your own working days
- Count the weekdays in the period, or use the business days calculator.
- Subtract the holidays your employer observes, which may not match the federal list.
- Subtract planned vacation, personal and sick days.
- Multiply by your daily hours.
The guide on how to calculate business days explains how holidays that fall on weekends are handled, and the hourly to salary calculator converts the result into annual pay.
Frequently asked questions
How many work hours are in a year?
The standard figure is 2,080 hours: 40 hours a week for 52 weeks. Counting actual weekdays, 2026 has 261 weekdays, or 2,088 hours at 8 hours a day. Excluding the 11 federal holidays leaves 250 workdays, or 2,000 hours.
How many working days are in 2026?
There are 261 weekdays (Monday through Friday) in 2026. All 11 federal holidays are observed on weekdays, so a full-time employee who gets every federal holiday off has 250 working days.
How many work hours are in a month?
On average, 173.33 hours (2,080 ÷ 12). Actual months range from 160 to 184 weekday hours depending on how many weekdays they contain; in 2026, July and December have 23 weekdays (184 hours) and February has 20 (160 hours).
Why do some years have 2,088 or 2,096 hours?
A 365-day year is 52 weeks plus 1 day, and a leap year is 52 weeks plus 2 days. The extra day or two adds a weekday unless it falls on a weekend, so years have 260, 261 or 262 weekdays.
What divisor does the federal government use for hourly pay?
Federal agencies use 2,087 hours to convert annual salaries of General Schedule employees to hourly rates, which reflects the long-run average number of weekday hours in a year.
