Knowing the hourly value of a salary helps you compare a salaried offer with an hourly one, price freelance work, or see what those extra evening hours are really worth. The arithmetic is a single division; the important part is choosing honest numbers for hours and weeks.
How to use the salary to hourly calculator
- Enter your salary and choose whether it is per year, per month, semimonthly, biweekly or per week.
- Enter the hours you work per week — your real average, including regular late nights if you want a true picture.
- Enter weeks worked per year: 52 for a like-for-like comparison with paid hourly jobs, or fewer to exclude vacation.
- The tape shows the hourly rate first, followed by annual, monthly, biweekly, weekly, daily and per-minute pay.
Salary to hourly formula
If you enter a monthly, semimonthly, biweekly or weekly amount, the calculator first converts it to an annual figure by multiplying by 12, 24, 26 or 52.
Worked example
You are offered a salary of $75,000 for a 40-hour week.
Hours per year = 40 × 52 = 2,080
Hourly rate = 75,000 ÷ 2,080 = $36.06
Weekly pay = 75,000 ÷ 52 = $1,442.31; biweekly = $2,884.62; monthly = $6,250.00
If the job routinely runs 50 hours a week, the effective rate drops to 75,000 ÷ 2,600 = $28.85 an hour. If you exclude three weeks of paid vacation, you earn 75,000 ÷ (40 × 49) = $38.27 for each hour actually worked.
Common salaries as hourly pay
For a 40-hour week and 52 weeks (2,080 hours):
| Annual salary | Monthly | Weekly | Hourly |
|---|---|---|---|
| $40,000 | $3,333.33 | $769.23 | $19.23 |
| $50,000 | $4,166.67 | $961.54 | $24.04 |
| $60,000 | $5,000.00 | $1,153.85 | $28.85 |
| $75,000 | $6,250.00 | $1,442.31 | $36.06 |
| $100,000 | $8,333.33 | $1,923.08 | $48.08 |
| $150,000 | $12,500.00 | $2,884.62 | $72.12 |
A quick estimate: halve the salary and drop the last three digits. $80,000 becomes about $40 an hour (the exact figure is $38.46).
When the hourly figure matters
Salaried versus hourly offers
A non-exempt hourly worker earns 1.5× pay for overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act; most salaried professionals are exempt and do not. If a salaried role expects 50-hour weeks, compare its effective hourly rate — not its headline salary — with the hourly alternative.
Freelance and contract rates
Contractors pay both halves of Social Security and Medicare (self-employment tax), buy their own benefits and are not paid for vacation or downtime. A common rule of thumb is that a contract hourly rate needs to be 1.25 to 1.5 times the employee-equivalent rate to match a salary.
To reverse the calculation, try the hourly to salary calculator, and see the federal income tax calculator for what the salary means after tax.
Results are gross pay estimates before income tax, payroll taxes and benefit deductions.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert my salary to an hourly rate?
Divide the annual salary by the number of hours you work in a year. For a standard 40-hour week and 52 weeks that is 2,080 hours, so a $75,000 salary equals $75,000 ÷ 2,080 = $36.06 an hour.
How much per hour is $50,000 a year?
At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, $50,000 a year is about $24.04 an hour. If you regularly work 45 hours a week, it is closer to $21.37.
Should I count vacation weeks?
To compare with an hourly job that pays for holidays and vacation, keep 52 weeks. To see what you earn per hour actually worked, subtract your vacation and holiday weeks; the hourly figure will rise.
Does the hourly rate include benefits?
No. The result is cash salary per hour. Employer health insurance, retirement contributions and payroll taxes add to the employer's total cost but are not part of your wage rate.
