Sometimes you need a card without a deck in reach: to practice a magic trick, settle a high-card draw, deal a quick solitaire start, make a writing or drawing prompt, or show students how card probabilities work. This generator shuffles a fresh virtual deck for every draw and deals the number of cards you ask for.
How to use the card generator
- Enter how many cards to draw.
- Choose the number of decks: one standard 52-card deck, or a shoe of 2 to 8 decks like a casino table.
- Choose without replacement to deal cards like a real hand, or with replacement to return each card before the next draw.
- Tick jokers to add two per deck, and sort to group the hand by suit and rank.
- Press Draw cards.
The tape counts red and black cards, face cards and aces in the draw.
Card probabilities
A standard deck has 52 cards: four suits (spades ♠, hearts ♥, diamonds ♦, clubs ♣) of thirteen ranks, ace through king. Hearts and diamonds are red; spades and clubs are black.
| One card from a full deck | Cards | Probability |
|---|---|---|
| A specific card (e.g., queen of hearts) | 1 | 1.92% |
| Any ace (or any other rank) | 4 | 7.69% |
| A face card (J, Q, K) | 12 | 23.08% |
| Any heart (or any suit) | 13 | 25% |
| A red card | 26 | 50% |
For several cards dealt without replacement, use combinations. The number of possible hands of k cards is
so five-card hands number C(52, 5) = 2,598,960.
Worked example: at least one ace in five cards
It is easiest to count the hands with no ace and subtract. There are 48 non-aces, so
and the chance of at least one ace in five cards is 100% − 65.88% ≈ 34.12%. Draw five cards a few dozen times and you will see an ace in roughly a third of the hands.
With or without replacement
The two modes model different situations:
- Without replacement is dealing. Each card drawn changes what is left: after the first ace, only 3 of the remaining 51 cards are aces, so the next draw’s chance of an ace falls to 5.88%.
- With replacement is like drawing a card, shuffling it back in and drawing again. Every draw has the same 1-in-52 odds, and the same card can appear twice in a row.
Multiple decks sit in between. In a six-deck shoe there are 24 aces among 312 cards, so removing one ace barely moves the odds — one reason casinos deal blackjack from shoes.
How shuffled is a virtual deck?
A deck can be arranged in 52! ≈ 8.07 × 10⁶⁷ orders — so many that a properly shuffled deck is almost certainly in an order no deck has ever been in before. This tool performs a Fisher–Yates shuffle with cryptographic randomness for each draw, which makes every one of those orders equally likely. Studies of hand shuffling suggest about seven riffle shuffles are needed to mix a physical deck well; the virtual deck is fully mixed every time.
Ideas for random cards
- Probability lessons: predict how many hearts appear in 20 single-card draws, then test it.
- Games without a deck: high card wins, war, or a random seat assignment by suit.
- Creative prompts: assign a theme to each suit and a number of words to each rank.
- Poker practice: draw five or seven cards and check the hand in the poker hand rankings evaluator.
To play a full game, try blackjack or count possible hands with the combinations calculator.
Each draw uses a freshly shuffled deck, so earlier draws never affect later ones. Nothing is recorded or sent to a server.
Frequently asked questions
What is the chance of drawing a specific card?
From a full 52-card deck it is 1 in 52, about 1.92%. The chance of any ace is 4 in 52 (7.69%), any heart 13 in 52 (25%), and any face card 12 in 52 (23.08%).
What is the difference between drawing with and without replacement?
Without replacement, drawn cards stay out of the deck, like dealing a hand, so a single deck can never give two aces of spades. With replacement, each card is returned and reshuffled before the next draw, so repeats are possible and every draw has the same odds.
How many different five-card hands are possible?
C(52, 5) = 2,598,960. Order does not matter for a hand, which is why the count is far smaller than the 311,875,200 ordered ways to deal five cards.
Can I include jokers?
Yes. Tick the jokers option to add two jokers per deck, making 54 cards per deck. Jokers are shown separately in the summary.
