Long before spreadsheets, offices added columns of figures on printing calculators that typed each entry onto a roll of paper. The tape was the point: you could check every number against the original document. This online adding machine works the same way. Each amount you enter prints on the tape with its sign, the running total updates as you go, and you can copy or print the finished tape.
How to use the adding machine
- Type an amount with the on-screen keys or your keyboard. The display shows what you are entering.
- Press + to add it to the running total or − to subtract it. The line prints on the tape with an item number.
- Press + again without typing anything to repeat the last amount — useful for several identical items.
- To multiply or divide, type a number, press × or ÷, type the second number and press = (or +). The product is posted to the tape.
- Press S for a subtotal or T for the total. The total line resets the running total for the next column.
- Use Undo last line to remove a mistake, then Print tape or Copy tape when you are done.
Keyboard shortcuts
| Key | Action |

How the running total works
The machine keeps an item count of every amount posted since the last total, just like the counter on a desktop printing calculator. Choose 2 decimal places for money, or floating decimals for measurements and other quantities.
Worked example
Checking a short expense report:
1,250.00 + → running total 1,250.00
39.99 + → 1,289.99
12.50 × 3 = 37.50 + → 1,327.49
20.00 − (a refund) → 1,307.49 · press S to print a subtotal of 1,307.49 (4 items)
0.10 + and 0.20 + → press T: Total 1,307.79 (6 items)
Unlike many quick calculators, the tape avoids floating-point noise: 0.10 + 0.20 prints as 0.30, not 0.30000000000000004.
Tips for accurate adding
- Use add mode for long columns of dollars. Typing 4599 instead of 45.99 saves a keystroke per entry and reduces misplaced decimals.
- Compare the item count with the number of receipts or lines you meant to enter; a mismatch means something was skipped or entered twice.
- Tick and tie. After printing, mark each tape line against the source document — the original reason adding machines print.
- Subtotal by page or category so an error can be traced to one section instead of the whole list.
For balancing a checkbook with a running balance, the checkbook register calculator lays transactions out in columns. To total a cash drawer by bills and coins, use the money counter. For a pocket-style calculator with memory keys, try the basic calculator.
The adding machine runs entirely in your browser. Results are calculated to 14 significant digits and rounded for display; check important totals against your source records.
Frequently asked questions
How do I use an adding machine?
Type an amount and press + to add it or − to subtract it. Each entry prints on the tape and updates the running total. Press S for a subtotal at any point, and T to print the final total and start a new one.
What is add mode?
Add mode places the decimal point automatically two digits from the right, so typing 1234 enters 12.34. Bookkeepers use it to enter dollar amounts quickly without pressing the decimal key. Typing a decimal point yourself overrides it for that entry.
What is the difference between subtotal and total?
A subtotal (S) prints the current running total but keeps accumulating, so you can check progress partway down a column. A total (T) prints the result and resets the running total to zero for the next calculation.
Is my tape saved?
Yes, the tape is stored in your browser on this device so it survives a page reload. It is never sent to CalcFluent. Press C to clear it; if you clear it by mistake, Undo brings it back.
Can I multiply on the adding machine?
Yes. Type a number, press ×, type the second number and press = or +. The product prints on the tape and is added to the running total, which is handy for quantities such as 3 items at $12.50.
