The week before finals, one question matters more than any other: what do I need on the final? The answer depends on three numbers — your grade going in, how much the final is worth, and the grade you want — and a little algebra. This calculator does the algebra, shows the steps, and lists the exam score needed for every letter grade at once.
How to use the final grade calculator
- Choose Score I need on the final or Grade if I score….
- Enter your current grade, the grade you have going into the final.
- Enter the final exam weight, the percentage of the course grade the final is worth.
- Enter the grade you want (or the final exam score you expect) and read the answer on the tape.
The table below the calculator lists the final exam score needed for each letter from A to D−.
Final grade formulas
If w is the final’s weight as a decimal (25% → 0.25), the course grade is a weighted average of your current grade and the final:
Solving for the final exam score gives
Worked example
You have an 84% going into a final worth 25% of the grade, and you want at least an 85% overall.
- Your current work counts for 1 − 0.25 = 0.75 of the grade, so it contributes 84 × 0.75 = 63 points.
- You need 85 − 63 = 22 more points from the final.
- The final is worth 0.25, so you need 22 ÷ 0.25 = 88% on the exam.
Check it the other way: if you score 80% instead, your grade is 63 + 80 × 0.25 = 63 + 20 = 83%, a B. And a perfect 100% would give 63 + 25 = 88%, so an A− (90%) is out of reach.
How the final’s weight changes the picture
Using the same 84% current grade, here is the final exam score needed for a 90% course grade at different weights:
| Final exam weight | Score needed for 90% |
|---|---|
| 10% | 144% (not possible) |
| 20% | 114% (not possible) |
| 30% | 104% (not possible) |
| 40% | 99% |
| 50% | 96% |
A heavily weighted final gives you more room to climb — and more room to fall. With a 50% final, scoring 60% would drop the same student to a 72%.
Making the most of the result
When the number looks impossible
If you need more than 100%, check whether your teacher drops the lowest quiz, offers extra credit or replaces a low midterm with the final score. Those policies change the inputs, not the math. The grade calculator lets you model them category by category.
When you are already safe
A result of zero or less means the target is locked in. That is a good time to aim for the next letter up in the table instead.
Plan your study time
Seeing the scores side by side helps you prioritize. If a B− needs a 68% and a B+ needs a 96%, the realistic goal is clear. Once grades are posted, see how the semester affects your overall average with the GPA calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate what I need on my final?
Use required = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final's weight as a decimal. With a current grade of 84%, a final worth 25% and a target of 85%, you need (85 − 84 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 88%.
What does it mean if I need more than 100%?
The target is out of reach on the final alone: even a perfect score leaves you short. You would need extra credit, a dropped score or a curve. The table shows which letter grades are still within reach.
What if the answer is zero or negative?
Then you have already secured that grade. Even a 0 on the final would keep your course grade at or above the target, assuming nothing else changes.
What should I enter as my current grade?
Your weighted grade on everything except the final, as shown in your gradebook. If your school's portal includes the final as a zero before it is graded, the displayed grade is misleading; use the grade calculator with the final left blank instead.
Does this work for a final project or the last unit test?
Yes. Any single remaining piece of work with a known weight works the same way. Enter its weight in place of the final exam weight.
