The 23 times table from 1 to 20

23 sits beyond the standard 12 × 12 chart, but its multiples come up constantly — a human body cell has 23 pairs of chromosomes. Each row also gives the division fact it answers.

Patterns in the 23 times table

  • Last digits. The ones digits of 23 × 1 to 23 × 10 are 3, 6, 9, 2, 5, 8, 1, 4, 7, 0 — all ten digits appear once before the pattern repeats, because 23 shares no factor with 10.
  • Odd and even. 23 is odd, so the answers alternate odd, even, odd, even — odd times odd is odd, odd times even is even.
  • Digit sums. Reduce each answer to a single digit (23 × 1 to 23 × 9 give 5, 1, 6, 2, 7, 3, 8, 4, 9) and all nine values appear before repeating.
  • A prime table. 23 is prime, so its table cannot be built by chaining smaller tables — split it instead: 23 × k = 10 × k + 13 × k.

A shortcut for multiplying by 23

Twenty times plus three times: 23 × 7 = 140 + 21 = 161.

Worked example: 23 × 7

Split 23 into 10 + 13: 10 × 7 = 70 and 13 × 7 = 91, so 23 × 7 = 161.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 23 times table up to 12?

23 × 1 = 23, 23 × 2 = 46, 23 × 3 = 69, 23 × 4 = 92, 23 × 5 = 115, 23 × 6 = 138, 23 × 7 = 161, 23 × 8 = 184, 23 × 9 = 207, 23 × 10 = 230, 23 × 11 = 253, 23 × 12 = 276.

What is the easiest way to learn the 23 times table?

Twenty times plus three times: 23 × 7 = 140 + 21 = 161.

What is 23 times 20?

23 × 20 = 460. Multiply 23 by 2 to get 46, then write a zero on the end.

Where is the 23 times table used in real life?

Any time you count equal groups of 23: a human body cell has 23 pairs of chromosomes, so the chromosome pairs in several human body cells come straight from the 23 times table.
