Phones and fitness trackers count steps, but distance is easier to picture and plan around. This calculator converts steps to miles and kilometers, or works backward from a distance to the number of steps it will take, using a step length estimated from your height or one you have measured.
How to use the steps to miles calculator
- Choose the direction: steps → distance or distance → steps.
- Enter your step count, or a distance in miles or kilometers.
- Choose how to set your step length:
- Estimate from height: enter your height and sex.
- I measured mine: enter your own step length in inches, feet, centimeters or meters.
- Read the distance (or steps), your steps per mile and per kilometer, and the walking time at a moderate 3 mph.
Steps to miles formula
When you estimate from height, the calculator uses a widely cited rule of thumb for walking:
Worked example
A man who is 5 ft 10 in (177.8 cm) walks 10,000 steps:
Step length: 177.8 cm × 0.415 = 73.8 cm (29.1 in)
Distance: 10,000 × 0.738 m = 7,379 m = 4.58 miles (7.38 km)
Steps per mile: 1,609.344 m ÷ 0.738 m ≈ 2,181. At 3 mph the walk takes about 1 hour 32 minutes.
Steps per mile by height
Using the height rule for walking:
| Height | Women: steps per mile | Men: steps per mile |
|---|---|---|
| 5 ft 0 in | 2,557 | 2,545 |
| 5 ft 4 in | 2,397 | 2,386 |
| 5 ft 8 in | 2,256 | 2,245 |
| 6 ft 0 in | 2,131 | 2,120 |
| 6 ft 4 in | 2,019 | 2,009 |
Running shortens the count a lot because running strides are longer; at an easy jog many people take 1,400–1,700 steps per mile.
Measuring your own step length
The height formula describes an average walker. For a better number:
- Mark a starting line on a sidewalk or track and walk normally for 20 steps.
- Measure the distance from the start to the heel of your front foot.
- Divide by 20. Repeat once or twice and average the results.
Measure separately for running if you also count running steps, and enter the result in the measured option. Many fitness trackers let you enter step length too, which improves their distance readings.
Putting steps in context
Step counts are a simple way to track daily movement. For walking workouts, convert distance and time into pace with the running pace calculator, estimate energy use with the calories burned calculator, and switch units with the kilometers to miles converter.
Informational only — not medical advice. Anyone with joint, heart or balance problems should build up walking distance gradually and ask a clinician about suitable goals.
Frequently asked questions
How many steps are in a mile?
For most adults walking at a normal pace, between about 2,000 and 2,500 steps. Taller people with longer steps need fewer; a 5 ft 10 in man averages about 2,180 steps per mile, while a 5 ft 2 in woman takes about 2,470.
How far is 10,000 steps?
Roughly 4 to 5 miles (6.5 to 8 km) for most adults. At a 26.8-inch step, typical for someone 5 ft 5 in, 10,000 steps is about 4.2 miles.
What is the difference between a step and a stride?
A step is the distance from one heel strike to the next heel strike of the other foot. A stride is two steps, from one heel back to the same heel. Pedometers count steps, so this calculator uses step length.
Do I need 10,000 steps a day?
The 10,000 figure began as a marketing number, not a medical guideline. Large studies, such as a 2022 meta-analysis in The Lancet Public Health, found mortality benefits rising up to roughly 6,000–8,000 steps a day for adults over 60 and 8,000–10,000 for younger adults.
