Most pregnancy dates count forward from the last menstrual period, but sometimes the question runs backward: when did conception actually happen? This calculator estimates the most likely conception date from a due date, from the first day of a last period, or from a birth date, and shows the window of days during which intercourse most likely led to the pregnancy.
How to use the conception calculator
- Choose what you know: a due date, the first day of your last period, or a birth date.
- Enter that date. With a last period, add your average cycle length. With a birth date, enter how many weeks of pregnancy the birth came at (40 for an on-time baby).
- Read the estimated conception date on the tape, along with the likely intercourse window, the most fertile days and an early pregnancy timeline.
How the conception date is estimated
Each starting point uses a fixed relationship between ovulation and the pregnancy calendar:
The 14 in each formula is the typical luteal phase — the time from ovulation to the next period — which stays fairly constant even when total cycle length varies. Conception is assumed to fall on the day of ovulation.
Worked example
Due date October 8, 2026: October 8 − 266 days = January 15, 2026.
Likely intercourse window: January 10 (five days before) through January 16 (one day after).
From a last period starting January 1, 2026 with a 32-day cycle: January 1 + (32 − 14) = January 19, 2026.
For someone born on time on January 1, 2000: January 1, 2000 − 266 days = about April 10, 1999.
Why the result is a window, not a single day
Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to about five days, while an egg remains viable for roughly 12 to 24 hours after ovulation. A widely cited 1995 study by Allen Wilcox and colleagues at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, which tracked daily hormone levels, found that conceptions came almost entirely from intercourse during the six days ending on ovulation day, with the highest odds in the last two or three. The calculator therefore shows a seven-day window — five days before ovulation through the day after, to allow for timing error — and highlights the two days before ovulation plus the day itself as the most fertile.
Add to that the natural variation in ovulation timing: even in people with regular cycles, ovulation can shift by several days from month to month. A conception estimate is best read as “around this date,” not as a precise event.
Conception date versus pregnancy weeks
Pregnancy is conventionally counted from the dating LMP, about two weeks before conception. A pregnancy described as 8 weeks along means the embryo is about 6 weeks past fertilization. Clinicians call the first number gestational age and the second fetal or embryonic age. The gestational age calculator shows both side by side, and the pregnancy due date calculator runs the same math forward.
Early pregnancy timeline
The table under the result lists the dating LMP, the opening of the fertile window, the estimated conception day, the typical implantation range (6 to 12 days after ovulation), the expected missed period, the end of the first trimester and the due date. Home pregnancy tests detect hCG, which only appears after implantation, so testing before the missed period often gives a false negative.
This calculator is informational only and is not medical advice. For pregnancy dating that guides care, rely on your healthcare professional, who may confirm dates with an ultrasound.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is a conception date estimate?
It identifies the most likely day, but the real date can easily be several days off because ovulation does not happen on the same cycle day every month. With an early ultrasound or an IVF transfer date, the estimate narrows considerably; from a period date alone, a margin of about a week is realistic.
Can a conception calculator determine paternity?
No. Because sperm can survive up to five days and ovulation timing varies, intercourse on dates several days apart can produce the same pregnancy. If paternity is in question, only DNA testing can answer it reliably.
How long after intercourse does conception happen?
Fertilization happens when sperm meet the egg, usually within about a day of ovulation. Since sperm can wait in the reproductive tract for up to five days, conception may occur several days after intercourse.
When was I conceived if I was born on my due date?
Subtract 266 days (38 weeks) from your birthday. For a birth on January 1, 2000, that points to about April 10, 1999. If you were born early or late, enter the pregnancy length at birth for a better estimate.
Why is conception about two weeks after the last period?
In a typical 28-day cycle, ovulation happens around day 14, and conception can only occur around ovulation. That is also why pregnancy weeks, which are counted from the last period, run about two weeks ahead of the baby's actual age.
