Picking teams by having captains choose one at a time is slow and leaves someone picked last. A random draw is quicker and feels fairer, and when skill levels vary a lot, a balanced draft keeps games competitive. This generator does both: paste names, choose how many teams or how many players per team, and get the groups instantly, with optional captains and team names.
How to use the random team generator
- Paste or type the players, one per line.
- Choose to split by number of teams or players per team, and enter the number.
- Choose completely random, or balance by skill rating if you have added a rating after each name.
- Pick a naming style — numbers, colors or letters — and tick captains if you want one chosen at random for each team.
- Press Make teams. Press it again for a fresh draw.
How the teams are made
Random mode
The list is shuffled with the Fisher–Yates algorithm, using cryptographic random numbers so that all orderings are equally likely. Players are then dealt to the teams in turn, like cards:
With n players and k teams, every team gets either ⌊n ÷ k⌋ or ⌈n ÷ k⌉ players.
Balanced mode
- Sort players from highest rating to lowest, breaking ties at random.
- Snake draft: team 1 picks first, then team 2 and so on; the order reverses each round (1→k, then k→1), so the team that gets the best player also gets the last pick of the next round.
- Swap pass: repeatedly swap one player between the strongest and weakest teams if it brings their totals closer, until no swap helps.
The tape reports each team’s rating total and the spread between the strongest and weakest team.
Worked example
Eight players with ratings: Carmen 9, Avery 8, Elena 7, Hana 7, Blake 6, Grayson 6, Diego 5, Farah 4 — into two teams.
Snake draft: Team 1 takes Carmen (9), Team 2 takes Avery (8) and Elena (7), Team 1 takes Hana (7) and Blake (6), Team 2 takes Grayson (6) and Diego (5), and Team 1 takes Farah (4).
Team 1 = 9 + 7 + 6 + 4 = 26; Team 2 = 8 + 7 + 6 + 5 = 26. The draft alone produced a perfect balance, so no swaps are needed.
A straight random split of the same eight can be as lopsided as 31 against 21 — fine for a casual game, not for a tournament.
Team sizes for common group sizes
Sizes are shown as players per team; “4 × 3” means three teams of four.
| Players | 2 teams | 3 teams | 4 teams | 5 teams |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 5 + 5 | 4 + 3 + 3 | 3 + 3 + 2 + 2 | 2 × 5 |
| 12 | 6 + 6 | 4 × 3 | 3 × 4 | 3 + 3 + 2 + 2 + 2 |
| 16 | 8 + 8 | 6 + 5 + 5 | 4 × 4 | 4 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 |
| 20 | 10 + 10 | 7 + 7 + 6 | 5 × 4 | 4 × 5 |
| 24 | 12 + 12 | 8 × 3 | 6 × 4 | 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 4 |
Tips for good teams
- Rate on one scale. A 1–10 scale works well; what matters is that the same person rates everyone.
- Use positions as separate draws. For sports with goalkeepers or setters, make teams from the specialists first, then from everyone else.
- Keep it private. Ratings never leave your browser, but you may not want them on a shared screen — the team cards show ratings in balanced mode.
To pick individual winners, use the random name picker or the animated wheel spinner. Once teams are set, a tournament bracket schedules the play-offs, and the coin flipper settles who serves first.
Frequently asked questions
How does the random team generator make teams fair?
In random mode it shuffles the whole list with a Fisher–Yates shuffle driven by cryptographic randomness, then deals players to the teams in turn. Every possible split with those team sizes is equally likely, and team sizes never differ by more than one.
How do I balance teams by skill?
Add a rating after each name, such as "Sam, 7", and choose Balance by skill rating. Players are sorted by rating and picked in a snake draft (1, 2, 3, 3, 2, 1 …), then players are swapped between the strongest and weakest teams while that narrows the gap.
What if the players do not divide evenly?
Some teams get one extra player. Twelve players in five teams, for example, gives two teams of three and three teams of two. Choose Players per team instead if you need teams of a fixed size, and the last team may be smaller.
Can the same list give different teams?
Yes — press Make teams again for a new draw. Balanced mode also varies the result, because players with equal ratings are ordered at random and the teams are presented in random order.
Are duplicate names allowed?
Duplicates are removed automatically, ignoring capitalization, so a pasted list with the same person twice does not put them on two teams. Add a last initial to keep two people with the same first name.
