Worked example: a $250 purchase

Combined rate = 6.25% state + 1.95% average local = 8.20%

Sales tax = $250 × 0.082 = $20.50 ($15.63 state, $4.87 local)

Total = $250 + $20.50 = $270.50

To back the tax out of a receipt total, divide by 1 plus the rate: $270.50 ÷ 1.082 ≈ $250.00. The reverse sales tax calculator does this for any rate.
