Worked example: a $250 purchase
Combined rate = 5.75% state + 1.54% average local = 7.29%
Sales tax = $250 × 0.0729 = $18.23 ($14.38 state, $3.85 local)
Total = $250 + $18.23 = $268.23
To back the tax out of a receipt total, divide by 1 plus the rate: $268.23 ÷ 1.0729 ≈ $250.00. The reverse sales tax calculator does this for any rate.
