A US size 9, a UK 8 and an EU 42½ can all describe the same shoe, but only if you know which chart you are reading. This converter translates between US, UK, European and Japanese (Mondopoint) centimeter sizes for men, women and kids, and can recommend a size from a foot measurement. The full charts are below the result and on this page.
How to use the shoe size converter
- Choose men’s, women’s or kids’ shoes.
- Choose the system you know: US, UK, EU, Japan/Mondopoint (cm), or foot length if you have measured.
- Enter the size, or pick a kids’ size such as 10C or 3Y.
- Read the equivalent sizes. When your number falls between chart rows, the nearest standard size is shown; try both neighbors.
How the conversion works
Each category has its own chart, and the converter reads across the matching row:
The centimeter column is the Japanese/Mondopoint size, which is meant to match foot length. When you enter a foot length, the converter picks the first size whose centimeter value is at least as long as your foot. Kids’ sizes use the US children’s scale, where each full size adds about one-third of an inch.
Worked example
You wear a US men’s 9:
UK: 9 − 1 = 8 · EU: 42.5 · Japan: 27 cm (about 10.6 in foot length)
The same foot in women's sizing: 9 + 1.5 = US women's 10.5.
A foot measured at 26.2 cm would round up to the 26.5 cm row: US men's 8.5, EU 42.

Getting the right fit
These are widely published standard conversions, but brands vary, sometimes by more than half a size. Allow about a thumb’s width (roughly 1–1.5 cm) between your longest toe and the end of the shoe, more for children’s shoes so they have room to grow. Width matters too: US widths run from narrow (B for men, AA for women) to extra wide (EE and beyond).
For clothing, see the clothing size converter; for jewelry, the ring size converter. The centimeters to inches converter handles any foot measurement.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert men's shoe sizes to women's?
In US sizing, add 1.5 to a men's size to get the women's equivalent, so a men's 8 is about a women's 9.5. Some brands use a difference of 1 or 2, so check the brand's chart for unisex styles.
What is the difference between US and UK shoe sizes?
In this chart, UK men's sizes are one smaller than US men's sizes and UK women's sizes are two smaller than US women's sizes. A US men's 10 is a UK 9; a US women's 8 is a UK 6. Some brands use a half-size gap for men instead.
What is a Mondopoint or Japanese shoe size?
Mondopoint, used in Japan and for ski boots and military footwear, labels shoes by foot length, in centimeters or millimeters. A 27 cm shoe fits a 27 cm foot, which this chart pairs with a US men's 9.
How do I measure my foot for shoe size?
Stand on a sheet of paper against a wall, mark the tip of your longest toe, and measure from the wall to the mark. Measure both feet late in the day, when they are largest, and use the longer one.
Why do my shoes fit differently between brands?
Every brand builds shoes on its own lasts, the foot-shaped forms that set length, width and volume, and sizing systems were never fully standardized internationally. Expect differences of half a size or more, especially between athletic and dress shoes.
