How XLIX is built
Roman numerals are written one decimal place at a time, from the largest place to the smallest. Converting each digit of 49 separately and joining the pieces gives XLIX:
| Place | Digit | Value | Numeral |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tens | 4 | 40 | XL |
| Ones | 9 | 9 | IX |
Reading it back, left to right:
- XL = 40 (L minus X) → running total 40
- IX = 9 (X minus I) → running total 49
The rules XLIX follows
- Largest to smallest. XLIX uses the symbols X, L and I (4 characters in all), and the values never increase from left to right except inside a subtractive pair.
- Subtraction. XL (40) and IX (9) are subtractive pairs: a smaller symbol in front of a larger one is taken away from it. Only six pairs are allowed — IV, IX, XL, XC, CD and CM — and XLIX uses two of them.
- No repeats. Every symbol in XLIX appears once in a row, which is why the numeral stays short.
Common mistakes when writing 49
- IL — wrong because I may only be placed before V and X, so “IL” is not a valid way to write 49; it has to be XLIX.
- XXXXIX — wrong because standard numerals never repeat a symbol four times; 40 is written XL. The correct form is XLIX.
- XLVIIII — wrong because standard numerals never repeat a symbol four times; 9 is written IX. The correct form is XLIX.
Where you will see XLIX
- Championship games. Pro football numbers its championship game with Roman numerals, starting from game I in January 1967. Game XLIX was played in early 2015.
- Volumes and sequels. Book volumes, conference editions, film sequels and anniversary events often carry a Roman numeral; edition XLIX would be the 49th.
Latin itself counted backwards here: undequinquaginta means “one from fifty,” the same subtractive idea that Roman numerals use in pairs such as IX and XC — although the numeral for 49 is written XLIX, not by subtracting from 50.

Frequently asked questions
How do you write 49 in Roman numerals?
49 is written XLIX. Break it into XL (40), IX (9) and add the parts: 40 + 9 = 49.
Is IL a correct way to write 49?
No. IL is wrong because I may only be placed before V and X, so “IL” is not a valid way to write 49; it has to be XLIX.
What is 49 in Latin?
The Latin cardinal number 49 is “undequinquaginta.” The Romans wrote it as XLIX.
What is XLIX plus one?
XLIX + I = L (50). Adding one can change the whole ending of a numeral, which is why it helps to convert to digits, add, and convert back.
